Cool Nights Hot Coffee.

Now that the cool nights of fall have arrived in Japan nothing tastes better that a cup of piping hot coffee in the morning. Many people have their own idea as to exactly how hot a cup of coffee should be. My mother likes it so hot that it would actually burn your mouth to drink it. Others prefer room temperature coffee, their idea being that extremely hot coffee doesn't have much actual coffee flavor. My personal idea is that it doesn't really matter what temperature you drink your coffee at as long as you've tried it at every temperature and finally arrived at your ideal level. One thing for sure is that when your hands are freezing in the early morning the hotter the better to thaw your fingers out.

Chemex and Aeropress coffee makers

We're selling out our stock of Chemex coffee makers on Yahoo-Japan auction. Chemex is very popular right now because of one small magazine article. Like with all other booms in Japan it will undoubtedly be fleeting.

For our long term plans we will stick with marketing the Aeropress. It hasn't hit a boom in Japan yet but when it does we'll be ready.

Visually the Chemex is much more appealing but in practicality and taste Aeroress wins hands down. My favorite cup of coffee is still just an old fashioned hand drip with a regular cheap filter cone. But for the coffee connoisseurs that prefer a rich cup of coffee without any bitterness or acidity the Aeropress just can't be beat.

When Pigs Fly!

Though it is an apparent impossibility for pigs to fly in the case of the swine flu it appears that a pig based virus has in fact flown around the world. I'm curious as to whether people who have been vaccinated for seasonal influenza on a yearly basis have any more resistance to the h1n1 swine flu than individuals who have never been vaccinated.

There are reports that this virus is not purely one of nature and that according to one eminent virologist is a virus that has accidentally or purposefully escaped from a laboratory. This would definitely explain why they haven't been able to find the source of the infection in Mexican pigs. Is this the major event that vice president Biden referred to that president Obama was going to have to deal with in the beginning of his presidency?

Certain isolated tribes throughout the world (that even to this day are self sufficient and have zero contact with the outside world) may end up being the only ones not affected by this crisis. Albeit they'll be victims in the future upon any contact because they will not have developed any immunity to it and a host of other common human based pathogens.

I believe that the world has entered a new frontier in the war on terror. I call it a war on terror because the constant threat of living in fear of catching the swine flu is a real terror for the worlds masses. This virus is something that we really do need to declare a war on. It numbers in trillions upon trillions and trillions of virulent little creatures. Humans are the real underdogs in this battle. Time is truly of the essence. This most recent pandemic is possibly just a warning of a sort. It couldn't have come at a much worse time when the economy has already been hammered to the point of a full on economic depression.

It is very sad that so many have already passed away as a result of this illness. It is of little relevance or consolation to the affected families and friends that statistically more people die in their bath everyday. Or that so many die from food poisoning etc. The media continue to review these cases as being so few and almost normal in comparison with other seasonal influenza. Why is the value of any human life trivialized in such a manner. If even one person were lost to this particular disease it would be one to many. The horror is not in the actual numeric number of those that perish or will perish but in the perception of the horrific. This mass media belittling of the apparent few number of fatalities so far incurred likewise doesn't comfort those who have lost loved ones to this terrible worldwide pandemic. The wife of a school vice principal in New York may have been willing to exchange the lives of millions of unknowns for the life of her beloved. In many ways it might be easier to accept if your loved one did drown while taking a shower than to be a victim of these silent evil virulent invaders.

My grandfather the late Reverend Carol H. Pederson was pronounced dead at the age of 18 in the year of 1918 from the Spanish Flu. As he was being carried away on a stretcher to be burned or buried he miraculously came back to life and sat up. The attendants carrying his stretcher thought he was a ghost and screamed as they dropped him and ran away. Luckily for me he did come back to life or I would never have been born. I hope many other people will come back to life from this Mexican Swine Flu. The world governments and their highly paid bureaucrats should have taken much swifter action. They knew this day was coming and when it came they sat rather idly by while the flu spread from country to country. Now it is too late and the terrible genie is out of the bottle. We'll all just have to ride this one out and hope (for some to pray to their god or gods) that the present swine flu will not marry the bird flu in Asia. Such a combination could possibly destroy well over half of the world population if not contained. Humans may not be affected the same as chickens but at times our leaders and rulers who are paid and supported to protect us really smell foul.

When the bird flu was killing millions of chickens in China the Chinese government allowed or perhaps even provided a generic type tamiflu or it's equivalent to the thousands of chicken farmers. The virus developed an immunity to the seeming miracle drug as a result. The bird flu is still prevalent throughout asia and if partnered with the human human infection rate of the swine flu the world is in real horrifying trouble. It is paramount that the world at this moment and time immediately dedicate all of it's resources in to developing effective vaccines for these threats. Present reports are that the bird flu has around a %60 fatality rate in an average healthy population.

Cellphones pop popcorn!

I remember when cellphones first started becoming popular and widely used. At first there were many press reports citing the danger of brain cancer. Then there were contradictory reports in the mass media that they were relatively safe. At last there was just complacency in regards to their use and worldwide domination. Well, seeing is believing. Tohno Ventures

Before the Beach Boys there were The Ventures. Ask most young people in the U.S. these days and they'd probably think you were talking about venture capitalists. The Ventures, however, are still touring Japan and have many loyal followers. The Tohno Ventures is a tribute band that plays extremely well and is very entertaining.

The Ventures may not be known anymore in the U.S. but their classic surf music is licensed in ever so many films of the past as well as commercials.

They definitely have a niche market here in Japan. They've been touring here since becoming world famous ever so many years ago. While The Ventures may not be touring in the U.S. or other countries around the world they have been consistently making their annual touring pilgrimage to the land of the rising sun since their beginning fame.

Jennifer Anniston quits coffee?

This may be old news but I read that Jennifer Anniston has quit drinking coffee in conjunction with quitting smoking. I've never understood why these choices always have to be all or nothing. Cigarettes are understandable due to their extremely addictive nature but coffee is in a completely different addictive category. A cup of coffee is one of those little somewhat healthy pleasures that can actually help those recovering from other addictions. It also really helps to keep your weight down when you drink it black as there are no calories. Usually people who quit smoking inevitably put on a few pounds in the beginning but quitting coffee at the same time would surely exacerbate this unwanted gain. Well if Jennifer Anniston ever changes her mind and decides to start brewing again I'd be elated to get even a little of her biz.

Drew Barrymore With Her Morning Joe.

Drew Barrymore is quite the looker. Especially when she looks so happy. It's not clear from these photos exactly what she's drinking but it does look like it's either coffee or tea. My guess would be coffee. Coffee always makes me smile, too.

It's great to see that she's turned over a new leaf and embraced a life of sobriety. From what I've read her younger years were quite tumultuous and she went through some very hard times.
he's really not only a very beautiful woman but an extremely talented actress as well.

Drew Barrymore is also one of the very few handful of actresses or actors that could make the transition from childhood fame to an adulthood professional acting career.

I suppose that one of the main reasons that celebrities continue to go out to get their coffee to go and take home is that they still want to be seen. It must get boring staying at home hiding from the paparazzi all of the time. Though they appear to be angry at times by the attention I can't but help to think that they also occasionally need the attention. All of the fame and wealth that they have achieved is at times meaningless unless they can descend down into the ranks of us common folk who admire and recognize their presence. In the small social circles that the rich and famous people of the world revolve in there is an incredible amount of isolation from the realities of the rest of the world. Walking into a local cafe is one way in which they can attempt to keep in touch with the rest of us mere mortals. At least I'm a mere mortal with a great cup of coffee everyday, though.

Warren Buffet Drinks Coca Cola.

CLICK ON WARREN BUFFET TO SEE A SHORT VIDEO OF HIS PERSONAL CHARACTER.

Warren Buffet one of the wealthiest people in the world doesn't drink coffee. But he religiously drinks Coca Cola according to a CNBC reporter that flew around the world on business with him. Coffee has one C and Coca Cola has two. Considering his age maybe he started drinking Coca Cola in the days when the added stimulant had a lot more kick than Caffeine. I have never been able to understand a person who doesn't drink coffee at all. For me it is just unfathomable to imagine drinking a bottle of Coca Cola on a regular basis in lieu of coffee.

Warren Buffet uses very little of his vast wealth for his personal use. He lives on a salary of $100,000. a year and lives in the same house that he bought in 1958 in Omaha Nebraska before he was even a little wealthy. His frugality seems to be a great source of pride for him. It's nice to know of a person that can live so well more than within their means.

He says that he will leave very little to anyone including his own children. He will leave almost everything that he owns to charity. Especially charities that are for the purpose of eliminating extreme poverty. He has already given more than several fortunes away in cooperation with Bill Gates for this same purpose, as well.

He is a hardy supporter of capitalism and believes that it really is the only system that builds countries and individuals up.

Along with Bill Gates, and a few mega wealthy others, Warren Buffet's tremendous philanthropical endeavors are an inspiration to us all. Even if he doesn't drink coffee.

The Richest Man's Coffee Is Free?

Does the richest person in the world Bill Gates drink coffee? According to one article I read he does drink coffee but he just doesn't always remember to pay for it. What kind of coffee does an extremely wealthy person like Bill Gates drink in his usual life, if any? Maybe his personal chefs have a micro roaster in their kitchen and they roast it fresh for him every day along with his fresh baked bread. Maybe they have chicken coops in his garden and he has freshly laid golden eggs for breakfast. It has always intrigued me how individuals that probably readily consume $1,000. bottles of wine thinking that they are cheap will drink the equivalent of rubbing alcohol in comparison when it comes to their coffee habit. I can't imagine someone such as Bill Gates drinking coffee in a small down local diner as was reported by one publication. The article said that he and famous news castor from NBC Tom Brokaw failed to pay for their coffee when they left a small town diner. Perhaps times of changed and the cappuccino he was supposedly drinking was the real mccoy. Somehow I doubt it but you never know. The one thing that I can tell you is that if Mr. Gates ever came into Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. for a cup of coffee it certainly wouldn't be on the house. I'd settle for an I O U but I'd never let one of his entourage put me off.

It is very nice of him and his wife though to travel around giving money away to the needy. If all of the worlds wealthy exercised such philanthropy the world would truly be a little nicer. It's encouraging that America is becoming a little more liberal again and the U.S.A.'s wealthy are going to exercise their latent philanthropic tendencies in the form of greatly increased taxation for the common good. Such is the nature of a true democracy. With a new and improved taxation system it may become impossible for future gillionaires to vault to such lofty monetary heights as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Donald Trump, Ted Turner, etc. But do really need new royalty in the world? Isn't it enough to have a profit incentive that with hard work and effort an individual can achieve a higher position than the common man without having the ability to buy them and control them. As has been said many times before "absolute power corrupts absolutely".

One of the reasons that I love specialty coffee is that it is one of the true connoisseur products in the world that I can justify the expense of. I cannot afford a bottle of wine that costs $100.00., let alone $1,000.00., or even a $1,000,000.00. Yet I can afford a cup of the finest coffee in the world for 20 to 30 cents. Our catch phrase for Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. is "gourmet coffee for connoisseurs". That doesn't mean that a person has to be one of the worlds wealthy to be able to afford it.
It is regrettable that is ever so much poverty in the world and their are billions and billions of people that do not have the ability to even afford 20 to 30 cents for a cup of coffee. These are problems that will not be solved easily. Though they can be solved.

Buying Fair Trade certified products absolutely helps. Buying any coffee or product that is grown in a third world country helps. At Mr. English we try to buy Fair Trade even if it costs more. But we continue to buy specialty coffee that isn't Fair Trade certified because it is our belief that not buying a countries product hurts a country as well as its poor farmers. There must be many examples of coffee farmers around the world that would like to become certified Fair Trade but they do not have the necessary information or funds to complete the ever increasing bureaucratic process of the certification process. It's not fair to cut them away from their livelyhoods just because they coudn't become certified. Fair Trade is a great idea and Mr. English Coffee absolutely supports it. But the world really isn't as black and white as many coffee marketers would have you believe. The world is full of colors and the Fair Trade certified concept is one of those beautiful colors.

Fair has many meanings to many different people. At Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. we are constantly trying to interpret what is fair and what is not. We buy as much Fair Trade certified coffee as long as we can still classify it as a grade A specialty coffee. We do not fly to poor coffee growing countries using precious fuel resources so that we can say we've been to Ethiopia, Zimbabwe,Honduras,Haitie, etc. and have seen many poor impovershed coffee farmers. In our mind this is unfair. Because the purpose of the trip wouldn't really be to help the poor coffee farmers out of their poverty but more of a marketing ploy.

So many of the coffee co.s in the world just love to travel to the coffee growing regions of the world in Indiana Jones style adventure themes so that they can say and show pictures of this years Yemen Mocha or this years Brazilian Arara and show a picture with their arm around one of the local farmers. This all seems really great and so very fair from the coffee co.s point of view. But if the coffee co. really thought from the point of view of the farmer: what do you think the farmer is thinking? Probably something like: "why do these coffee buyers spend so much money coming here every year taking pictures? Why don't they just save these precious traveling resources and pay more for my coffee so that I can feed my family? As mentioned earlier fair has many different meanings to many different people. Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. thinks that in small way that Bill Gates one of the richest persons in the world gets the idea and concept of fairness a little. He's incredibly super rich and it's unfair. It's never going to be fair but he's going to try and make it a little more fair by traveling around the world and giving away his money to worthy causes. I think that this philanthropy of Mr. Gates is a great deal more fair than the supposed kind hearted "Fair Trade" and now direct trade coffee roasting co.s that travel around the world haggling with the locals over the price of the beans. Some of these co.s claim to give %1 of their profits to charity. Some of them claim to be the fairest of the fair. Yet all of them are co.s that are profit based. It doesn't mean that what they do is wrong it's just that they paint a holier than thou image of their co.s that is just not accutate.

At Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. we don't believe there is anything wrong with making a profit. Profit will be one of the keys to solving many of these present world financial woes. We are just honest about it. We are here to roast and provide the best coffee in the world. "Gourmet Coffee For Connoisseurs" and try and make a fair and balanced profit. Mr. English has no plans to fly around the world taking pictures of the farmers for our marketing purposes. We'd rather just help the farmers by paying a fair price for their coffee as we can. Every expense that our co. incurs in traveling is basically taking food off the farmers plate in a very direct way. It may be a good idea for co.s to occasionally visit coffee growing regions to better understand about the product and develop better ties with the farmers. But these need for information and communication needs to be weighted very carefully to the present economic situation of the coffee farmer. If ones parents were living in a far off land and had been evicted from their house with no means of support would they want you to fly to see them and talk about your future together. Or would they rather have you just stay home and send them the $3,000 or so that it would cost for you to travel to see them and analyze their situation? I think most in such dire circumstances would rather receive direct money rather than offers of direct trade.

Traveling to a foreign country to actually cup the coffee at the source makes very little sense considering that when the container of beans arrive at port the beans that were cupped at the source by the direct trade coffee roasting co.s are the same exact lot of beans that Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. purchases through various brokers and trading co.s. Direct Trade co.s are typical importing in such small amounts that they cannot get reasonable shipping terms when compared to the larger co.s. Small Direct Trade roasters do not have the capital to purchase futures for the farmers crop so that the farmer can have security against next years crop prices for their families. Basically all that Direct Trade roasting co.s do is insult well established coffee brokerage and trading co.s for the benefit of their own profit based marketing ploys. There is a problem with the price that poor farmers are being paid for their coffee. And co.s like Starbucks, Peets, Tullys, McDonalds, etc. are responsible for this. They sell a 5 cent a cup cheap product for $3.00 to $5.00 a cup. The The well established coffee brokerages and trading co.s actually have very reasonable profits considering the tremendous risks they take. They do not buy the coffee for $1.00 a pound and sell it for $10.00. a pound as many fair trade screamers would have you believe. Specialty brokers deal in large lot shipments and while I don't know the exact percentages they charge I would guess it to be between %10 to %30 depending on various risk factors. In small micro roasting co.s such as Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. the expense of the bean is not the greatest expense of our product.

Businesses have many other cost associated with just opening their doors for business everyday. Electricity, gas, insurance, property taxes, local health departments, various certifications, business licenses, insurance, equipment maintenance, salaries, etc etc. All of these expenses have to be reflected in the price of the product before any profit can even be considered. We always joke with out customers that sometimes stay for 2-3 hours or more that the $3.00 is for the seat rental and the cup of coffee is our free service. The actual cost of the cup of coffee for even one of the highest grade premiums is only around 30 cents. The actual cost of %100 Jamaica Blue Mountain is around $3.00 and therefore we feel it justifies a price of around $5.00. The cheapest grades of coffee that large co.s like Starbucks and Peets blend some premium beans with to get the extreme profits they need for growth and world domination have an actual cost of 5 cents or even less with their mega direct buying powers. Co.s that charge $9.00 for a cup of coffee, no matter what type of high tech new aged coffee maker it's made in, should be ashamed of themselves Unless they are in a high rent location and the customers are paying for the space.

In any case Mr. English Coffee Roasting co. would like to thank everybody around the world that is considering and trying to help improve the dire and immediate situation of the poor and needy. Buying Mr. English Coffee does help because most of the worlds finest Aribica specialty beans are picked by the hands of the worlds poorest. Not drinking the coffee that they toil hour after hour picking doesn't help them. Buying and drinking their product does support them. If it happens to be a fair trade certified product then that's even better.

Coffee Rage!

Although I don't like to say anything negative about coffee and caffeine there are those who are best to abstain. I myself occasionally take a break for a few days or so to try and lower my tolerance level but giving up my sweet nectar of life is not on my list of priorities. The following article is one that I found about Hugh Grant and Robbie Williams. Hugh Grant is quoted as saying that Nescafe is the best tasting coffee in the world. He really needs to try some Mr. English Coffee. The article is centered upon the idea of something called coffee rage and coffee intolerance.

Robbie Williams is said to have checked into rehab after drinking 36 espressos a day and Red Bull. I love my espresso and I can drink 5-6 shots but if I were to drink 36 espresso shots I would probably become deceased.

If you’re feeling angry, irritable and aggressive, and suffering from a bad headache to boot, the chance is that you are experiencing a new malady – coffee rage.

Coffee’s main active ingredient caffeine may help you get awake in the morning, but a new study has found that one in 20 people have an intolerance to it.

This means that they not only feel itchy, depressed and tired, but also get joint pains and migraines usually within an hour of drinking a cup.

These symptoms, experts say, are leading to the new phenomena they call coffee rage.

A spokesman for YorkTest, who carry out food and drink intolerance tests, said that with coffee shops booming in the UK, as well as the fact that there are coffee machines at every home nowadays, this problem is only going to grow.

“The High Street is full of coffee shops and people have machines at home producing stronger coffee than they used to drink. There appears to be a tipping of the scales in terms of what the body can take,” the Sun quoted him, as saying.

Among the more famous people who suffer from coffee rage is actor Hugh Grant who admits: “I get coffee rage. It comes after drinking Nescafe. It’s the world’s most delicious coffee but I get foul — really foul — an hour later.”

Singer Robbie Williams is another celebrity with a similar problems. He checked into rehab in February when his habit reached 36 espressos a day.

He was also drinking caffeine-rich Red Bull as well.

The Queen Of England And Ronald Reagan.

CLICK ON HER ROYAL MAJESTY

The Queen of England apparently likes coffee with caffeine and President Reagan drank decaf according to this little video clip. We can also see former first lady Nancy Reagan and former President Ford at this little tea party with coffee. I wonder what their reaction would have been if they had been served some Mr. English coffee. I have no idea as to what they were drinking other than it was caffeinated or decaffeinated but in those days that was about the only amount of thought put in to a cup of coffee. If people actually received a cup of coffee that really tasted good they thought it was an extraordinary event.

CLICK ON BONZO BEFORE HIS BEDTIME

I remember the day that Ronald Reagan was elected president of the United States was the day my late father quit drinking. He said that Ronald Reagan was a great actor and quite comical in shows such as Bed Time For Bonzo but the idea of an actor being elected president was really shocking for him. President Reagan had many supporters and detractors alike. I always support my president whether they be democrat or republican as they are the president. That doesn't mean I have to vote for them, though, the next time around. I think that if president Reagan were still alive that he would be very proud of Americans for electing President Obama. That surely doesn't mean he would have voted for him.

CLICK ON HER MAJESTY

The final last sentence of this video is incredibly interesting. It's a comment by Queen Elizabeth and it is almost as though she could look into the future and see this day in time 2009. The comment interested me so much that I ended up watching this clip more than several times. It's truly a must see. I definitely wouldn't have wanted what they were serving up in that silver pot though. I can't tell if it was silver but I imagine it could have been so. Stainless steel acidifies coffee quite enough. I shudder to think of what even a few minutes in sterling silver would do the coffee.

Link to famous coffee quotes.

CLICK ON THE QUOTATION MARKS TO GO TO A VERY INTERESTING INDEX OF FAMOUS COFFEE QUOTES.

I have no way to verify to the authenticity of the following link but most of them seem plausible and quite interesting as well. I especially like the one by Abraham Lincoln who seems to be a role model for President Obama. "If this is coffee, please bring me some tea; but if this is tea, please bring me some coffee." President Obama says he rarely drinks coffee and yet he always quotes President Lincoln. If he really wants to follow in President Lincoln's footsteps and lead the U.S. and the world to financial prosperity and peace again then maybe he too should drink coffee rather than tea. Surely, he'll need all of the energy he can get in the days ahead as he tries to pull the world economy out of the abyss. Maybe people including myself should stop complaining and start helping. Waking up in the morning up with a cheery cup of coffee won't save the world economy but it will help because coffee is the second largest traded commodity next to oil. It's surely a lot better for you and coffee plantations are definitely not the cause of global warming either.

Behind those dark sunglasses it's hard to guess what kind of coffee Sharon Stone is drinking. If I were to guess I would have to think she took her coffee black. If I remember correctly one of her films that she filmed with Michael Douglas was one of the first main stream blockbuster hollywood movies to have two movie icons actually giving a spring performance of the birds and the bees. The name of the movie slips my mind but it definitely woke me up and I wasn't even roasting or drinking coffee.

The following is a true story obtained originally from the U.S. embassy in Tokyo.

A true story from the Japanese Embassy in US: Prime Minister Mori was given some basic English conversation training before he visited Washington and met with President Bill Clinton. The instructor told Mori" Prime Minister, when you shake hands with President Clinton, please say 'how are you'.

Then Mr Clinton should say "I am fine, and you?" Now you should say 'me too'. Afterwards we, translators, will do all the work for you." It looks quite simple.

But the truth was:

When Mori met Clinton, he mistakenly said "Who Are You?". Mr Clinton was a bit shocked but still managed to react with humor: "Well, I am Hilary's husband, ha ha..." Then Mori replied confidently "Me too, ha ha ha.."

Then there was a long silent moment in the meeting room.

Below more miscellaneous info. as to the coffee likes and dislikes of famous politicians. President Obama says he rarely drinks coffee. He should definitely try Mr. English Coffee. It is a lot healthier than smoking cigarettes. And it won't set a bad example for his lovely daughters and billions of other precious children, either. He's absolutely going to need all the energy he can muster to clean up all of the mess his predecessors left him with. A great cup of coffee gourmet specialty would be a great morning White House pick me up and give him something to look forward to when his mind starts wandering towards puffing on a cancer stick. He is now the president of the United States of America for the next four years and all true Americans must really try their best to accept him and help him in his presidency even if they didn't vote for him. At least he's not trying to change the constitution like they did down in Venezuela and proclaim himself president for life. It's time for all real Americans to stop complaining in the negative and to start doing in the positive. Mr. English is roasting coffee for not only the rich and famous people of the world but all of the people of the world. That's our contribution to help out and make things a little better. It's a small thing but imagine what the world would be like if the only coffee choices were co's like Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Peets, Folgers, Maxwell House, Sanka, and Dunkin Donuts etc.. Well, those are all great choices for people who don't understand what real specialty gourmet coffee tastes like but for the few that have already partaken in the sweet precious nectar of a real cup of coffee life would just not have the same meaning without the small micro roasters around the globe like Mr. English coffee who think of more than just profit, profit, profit. But first and foremost consider fairness, aroma, and taste. Profit is just an incidental that is needed to continue doing business, never something that is the driving force of the co. Small and local is good for the many. Global and Mega is only a path to eventual destruction of anything except selfish profit for a few.

On the December 14 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, host Wolf Blitzer cited a December 12 Associated Press article, in which the presidential candidates answered questions about their coffee preferences, part of the AP's "series of questions about [the candidates'] personal side," and announced, "[L]ook at this -- Hillary Clinton is a flip-flopper. Sometimes she takes it black, sometimes with cream." Yet, Blitzer had offered no characterization of either Rudy Giuliani's or Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) coffee preferences, noting only "Giuliani prefers low-cal sweetener, any brand will do" and "McCain is fond of cappuccino, or coffee with cream and sugar."

The December 12 AP article, in its entirety:

Hold the sugar.

Presidential candidates who drink coffee prefer artificial sweetener or no sweetener, for the most part.

AP asked candidates a series of questions about their personal side. Today's question is about what they take in their coffee. The answers:

DEMOCRATS:

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton: Sometimes black, sometimes with cream

Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards: Doesn't drink it

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama: Black, but rarely drinks it

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: Cream

REPUBLICANS:

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani: Splenda, Sweet'n Low or Equal, whichever is available

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: Splenda

Arizona Sen. John McCain: Cappuccino or coffee with cream and sugar

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney: Doesn't drink it, has been known to have hot chocolate

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson: Cream

From the December 14 edition of CNN's The Situation Room:

BLITZER: Let's take a campaign coffee break right now. The Associated Press asked the presidential candidates how they like their coffee. Take a look at this:

Rudy Giuliani prefers low-cal sweetener, any brand will do. Mike Huckabee is more specific; he likes Splenda. John McCain is fond of cappuccino, or coffee with cream and sugar. Fred Thompson says "cream, please." Bill Richardson: also a cream kind of guy.

Barack Obama takes it black, but says he rarely drinks coffee. John Edwards says "no thanks," he doesn't drink the stuff. And on this issue -- look at this -- Hillary Clinton is a flip-flopper: Sometimes she takes it black, sometimes with cream.

PRESIDENT BUSH SENIOR THROWS UP ON PRIME MINISTER MIYAZAWA IN 1992

CLICK ON THE UPPER LEFT PRESIDENT BUSH TO READ AN ARTICLE OF HIM THROWING UP ON OR NEAR THEN PRIME MINISTER Miyazawa. JAN 9th, 1992. CLICK ON THE LOWER RIGHT PRESIDENT BUSH TO SEE A SMALL CLIP OF THE ACTUAL EPISODE PLUS A LITTLE BIT OF ADDED COMEDY TOWARDS THE END. EVERYBODY HAS PUBLICLY HUMILIATING AND EMBARRASSING MOMENTS IN THEIR LIVES. EVEN MR. ENGLISH.

Yesterday I posted a video of the Japanese Finance minister, Shoichi Nakagawa, who slightly slurred his words at a G-7 summit because of possible exhaustion, fatigue, cold medcine, or a combination of. I also made comments that he had better drink coffee rather than wine in a joking way. Today in face of worldwide humiliation and non stop mass media coverage he has resigned. His resignation is regrettable and sad, too. Whether he was a good, great or terrible finance minister is not the point but what is is that the world is ever unforgiving and extremely lacking in its ability of common and decent compassion. In pursuit of this often missing fairness and compassion I have removed the video link to this small but personally embarrassing matter for him and wish him a happy life in his retired political career. This is a very small gesture on my part but necessary considering the circumstances. I also offer a personal apology on my part to Mr. Nakagawa for posting what I thought was an amusing video of a politician taking a cat nap. There is nothing amusing in his resignation and I take no personal pleasure from it whatsoever. I had mentioned in the comments of the posting of this clip that he shouldn't feel to bad considering that former president Bush senior threw up on the lap of then prime minister Miyazawa. I'm sure at the time president Bush was likewise extremely embarrassed, luckily for him they didn't have You Tube to instantaneously broadcast images of it around the world. It was reported in the news but it really wasn't paid all that much attention to. I still think that he'd better drink Mr. English Coffee but that is besides the matter.

Meg Ryan is sleepless in Japan because she's drinking instant coffee.

I don't know if Meg Ryan is really drinking this instant Nescafe or just advertising it. Starbucks opened up in Japan just after her hit movie with Tom Hanks "Sleepless in Seattle". Because this movie was incredibly popular in Japan with young women and featured ever so many shots of Starbucks in the movie it was perfect timing when they opened their first stores in Japan shortly after the movie's release. Many stories were featured about Starbucks in the Mass Media as well and for awhile Starbucks was an instant success. The existing large Japanese Mega coffee co.'s were caught off guard by the newcomers instant popularity. Overtime though as they developed new themed cafes they are slowly regaining market share. Starbucks is still growing in Japan but it doesn't look as though they are going to end up with the same dominance that they did in the U.S. of the Japanese market. Nevertheless, Starbucks is here to stay in Japan unlike other fads and talent that come and go.

Madonna drinks frappacino?

It's really hard to tell by the picture whether Madonna is drinking a Peets Frappacino or a Starbucks coffee slop shake. But it definitely looks like some kind of coffee blended drink. It's quite interesting the amount of people who like to carry their coffee with them in take out cups. It's almost as if they are going through life as one giant movie with popcorn in hand. The origins of the takeout culture date back to the world fair in Saint Louis in 1904. They needed to keep people moving rather than sitting in one place because the logistics of trying to provide tables and seating for the large numbers of attendees were astronomical. Everything was designed as much as possible to make it portable and easy to carry so that people could walk around looking at the events while eating and drinking rather than sitting and relaxing as was the norm. This was the beginning of our modern day walk away culture. Rather than sitting in a cafe for a few minutes and relaxing while drinking our favorite beverage many prefer to take it out in a paper or plastic cup so they can sip on it while they are also trying to operate their motor vehicle, use their cell phone, and play with their car stereo all at the same time. Then when they are finished with their drink they have to remember to take the throw away cup out of their car when they park otherwise the next time they get in with another cup they will have trouble because there is still an empty one in the cup holder.

Katie Holmes drinking Peet's Coffee.

The above picture is of Katie Holmes wife of Tom Cruise leaving a West Hollywood Peet's coffee. She obviously looks like she's either pregnant or Peets is selling California Watermelons and she just stole one under her blouse. She has two cups in hand. One of the cups could be imagined is for her husband Tom Cruise and one for herself. For the sake of her baby I hope she is drinking an herbal tea. If she is drinking decaffeinated coffee she shouldn't buy it at Peets because they use the cheaper decaf beans that are decaffeineated using a chemical process. They claim it is water process but it isn't actually the all natural Swiss Water Process used my Mr. English Coffee but rather Select Water Process which involves the use of Methyl Chloride in the decaffeination process. According to Swiss Water Corporation in Canada Peets hasn't purchased real Swiss Water Process for some years.

And what about Tom's brushed stainless steel thermos. Don't katie and tom want their child to grow up in a cleaner world. Why didn't she bring his green stainless cup to buy his coffee at Peet's. Maybe she was in a hurry to eat some pickles with mustard and chocolate sauce.

Tom Cruise's $2,000 coffee cup

There's a brazilian auction site trying to auction off this coffee cup supposedly discarded by Tom Cruise on a recent vacation with his wife Katie Holmes. They auction is asking around $2,000. No word yet as to whether anyone actually bought the cup or not but if someone would pay $2,000. for a disposable cup used once imagine how much they would pay for his brushed stainless thermal mug undoubtedly used many times. I wonder why he didn't bring his stainless mug with him on vacation. Is Tom only a convenient suto green guy?

Tom Cruise and Top Coffee

Here's a picture of Tom Cruise going somewhere and drinking something. It's a coffee thermos cup but there's no knowing if it has hot coffee in it or a banana smoothie with protein powder. It is really nice to see that he is trying to be green, though, and that he is not using a paper cup. This type of brushed stainless steel cup is okay for hot coffee for short periods of time but they shouldn't be washed out very much just a quick rinse after each use. Letting the coffee oils build up inside helps protect the delicate acids in the coffee from the reacting with the steel. I think the best thermoses are glass lined for storing coffee but there don't seem to be any glass lined thermos cups. In any case Mr. Cruise looks like he is on the go going somewhere. Maybe he's filming his new Arabica thriller "Top Coffee" and the coffee cup he's holding is one of his props. It sure would be nice if someone would send him some fresh roasted Mr. English Coffee beans so that he could experience something new and unique. I wonder if he drinks coffee or even really cares about what it tastes like. Even in exclusive affluent community gourmet grocery stores where most of the rich and famous shop the coffee is usually stale. I'm always surprised at how such stores can sell the finest wines costing thousands of dollars a bottle. Little bottles of olive oil that are so expensive they have to kept locked up in little glass cases and yet when it comes to coffee they usually have the mass market commercial likes of Peets or Starbucks that have been sitting around for what seems to be a century getting stale and rancid. Then people actually buy this coffee, drink it, and end up with a stomach ache from all of the rancid acid. At which point they put more and more milk in their coffee thinking that this will protect their delicate stomachs from all of that nasty coffee acid. I seriously doubt if they were to buy a smashed wrotten tomato that upset their stomach that they would ad milk to it to protect their stomach from it's putridness and yet that is exactly what happens in regards to stale coffee that has been sitting on the shelf of the most exclusive markets in Beverly Hills, Malibu, Laguna Beach, etc. In the case of Mr. English Coffee we don't even believe in stocking it in a supermarket unless the local vendor is willing to regard it as a perishable item in the line of a fruit or vegetable that has to be closely monitored for freshness.
